Here's a basic list of various Role Play terms:
RP - Role Play. Can also be called RPG.
OC - An original character that you created either for the RP or not.
NPC - A non-playable character. Such as a shop keeper or pedestrian. Someone you cannot describe the inner thoughts of or use to often, if they are recurring. And INPC is an important NPC, that is significant to the story.
God Modding/Playing - God modding/playing is when a person controls another characters actions or outcomes. Like if you are character #1 and you write "Character #2 goes to a club", that would be god modding. It would also be god modding/playing if you were to say "Character #2 has been shot". You can do anything, as long as the outcome of another character is not determined. You can shoot AT another character, but you can't say if it hits or not. Most people who RP are good sports so they will allow you a hit or two, but you must allow them some as well. Also, if your character is invulnerable. It can be killing or injuring a character without the player's express permission. It can be when they simply can’t be hit and dodge all attacks or anything for this matter aimed at them. It can also be using other characters that other people RP with. In other words, if you do not RP as character 1, then you cannot have character 1 say anything, or do anything, without the player's express permission.
GM - Game Master/Moderator. The person in charge of the RP. There can also be Co-GMs. It's very easy to confuse this term with God Modding, considering the initials. Try to distinguish one from the other, by seeing what context it is used in, if they use GM as the term.
CS, CO - Character Sheet or Character Outline. A form usually provided by the game master that you use to create an/or describe and enter your character in the RP. Usually consists of a name, age, gender, biography, physical description, and weapon/power.
IC, OOC - IC means in character. You use the IC tag to say when you are in character. It's generally good to put an IC tag before each of your characters, if you have multiple ones. The OOC tag is saying you are out of character, and you are just you posting as...you. Try not to get it confused with OC. BIC means back in character.
Mary Sue & Gary/Larry Stu - A term that references overly general and cliched characters. Being portrayed in an overly idealized way and lacking noteworthy or realistic flaws. Characteristics include, but are not limited to: more powerful than every character, troubled past, main focus of story and characters, exotic appearance; perfection.
The hr tag and/or a sequence of ----- means you are dividing your post into sections. This can be a substitution for the IC and OOC tags, although each section should still be defined.
Other terms
Canon - Canon, in the context of a fictional universe, comprises novels, stories, films, etc., that are considered to be genuine or officially sanctioned, and those events, characters, settings, etc., that are considered to have existence within the fictional universe. Basically, things that are accurate and supporting of a show's true storyline.
Fandom The community that surrounds a tv show/movie/book etc. Fanfiction writers, artists, poets, and cosplayers are all members of that fandom. Fandoms often consist of message boards, livejournal communities, and people.
FTW - A term that means for the win, usually in online trading card game simulation.
