Wow...huge let down. I was expecting sheer awesomeness after that unbelievably long wait. The story was rushed, the plot was predictable, and some of the animation was below standards. Hopefully it'll get better in future episodes...
The pacing made it SO much worse. There's plenty of filler stuff (oh come on...you know it'll be there) which could be dumped to make room for more plot. This episode was SO rushed. I could have lived with the speed of the events in the Fire nation, but everything with the "Gaang" was so...bad. They could of either extended this episode or used some of their material later on, such as Katara's fight with her father and revealing Ozai's face. (which was overly basic, btw) I mean, they could have spaced it out more and ended with Aang fleeing and then resolving the events in the next episode, extending everything they could. Plus, they have time to mention the Earth King but none to mention Iroh? Well, that's expected with the pacing problem, but that should have been something to make room for. And everything that happened was so lame; especially Aang's emo outlook on everything. And I couldn't believe the whole thing with Yue and Roku...it was so cheesy. However, the turtle ducks things was actually pretty symbolic. Anyone else get the reference? It's not that worst episode ever, just with all of the hype...seems like it should have been more satisfying. Not much awesomeness...

To be honest, I think this was the best episode I have seen so far for Book 3. The episode had hype, it had a cool beginning with a naval battle of two Fire Nation ships. Everything seemed to stream into place, even if the episode was quick.
I do not see why people complain about Katara's break out about her father. Remember, there are two weeks between Book 2 and Book 3, meaning she was probably feeling this way for the entire time she was with him and feeling broken once Aang ran away. When you think about it, she had every right to feel this way. Her father left them behind and even though they were in caring hands, she still could have had a father figure around other than her brother.
Katara knows why Hakoda needed to leave. She respects his decision to fight in the war and help people who are in distress, but she still has this selfish quality that she needed a father figure. Yet another reason to hate this war. I feel bad for Katara every time we see her. Everything she had to deal with in her life always breaks my heart. Loosing her father in her childhood, being betrayed by Zuko and even Jet. The girl had a hard life, please give her a break. At times, I sometimes wish I could just break down like she did and cry.
I guess this is how attached I have grown to these characters and I love every single one of them. I sympathize with all of the characters when I have certain feelings. Like I relate to Toph, because sometimes I have imprisoned with the internet as my only social life. Another reason that makes me just wish I could break out and cry like Katara did. The craziness that is King Bumi, the emoness of Zuko and the evil side of me in Azula. I guess it's alright, seeing how IF the evidence that Christ is nothing more then an imaginary character is correct. Then there are a lot of people moved and touched by imaginary characters.

Contrasting from "Unknown Man" here, I honestly disliked this episode; it was one of the worst episodes of the season thus far, in my personal opinion, that is. >.> The episode was INCREDIBLY rushed, and it didn't even feel like an Avatar episode. It seemed like a mock episode to me. A lot of moments just killed me. Ozai's face revealed early, the sudden Maiko, the fact that Aang became so emo ((s'matter of fact, he became awfully cheery in the next episode)), the randomness of Yue, the disappearance of the Earth King and many more various moments of the episode pissed me off. I apologize to any other Avatar fans, but this episode was so not like Avatar. >.<

I agree with Liamane. UM, why did you bring religion into this? o.o?

To be honest. I am going to repeat something another Avatar fan said on AvatarSpirit or Distant Horizon. If anyone has the right to be "emo" it's Aang. He has the entire world on his shoulders and the fear of losing, throwing the world into chaos once more. Won't that make you a little bit emo?
Why would you wanted Ozai's face revealed later on? It was interesting that they revealed his face like it wasn't a big deal anymore. Plus he was in more episodes this time around, so when were they going to reveal it?
Seeing how the episodes this season has been nothing much but fillers, this episode could be the first episode you play next to The Day of Black Sun. It just seems like it will be the first in a trilogy to me. But I still would have liked to see what the invasion force was doing when gathering everyone. Yue was probably the only spirit that could have helped him with the wave. You still have Avatar Roku, so you know he pulled some strings with Yue.
As for the Earth King, it would have been cool if we got a mini conic about his adventures in the Earth Kingdom. But in all seriousness, that might be a good way for him to leave. Remember he was in the palace for almost his entire life. He never saw much of the city he ruled over or for that matter the country. It would make sense if he traveled the world to make him a better King once the Firelord is out of power.

You know, now that I think about it, that makes perfect sense! I could never figure out why Yue just showed up, but her giving Aang the power to make the wave is probably the explanation. Great point UM!

I would really prefer The Awakening over The Painted Lady. That episode just seemed very "incomplete" so to speak. It just didn't have that shine for me. Like I said before, Book 3 just hasn't had that shine for me. I guess one needs to re-watch the entire season to understand it. Perhaps even watch the entire Book 1, Book 2, and Book 3. Sadly I won't be getting Book 3 until next Christmas.
When I saw Yue, I thought almost the same way. Like why she would be appearing for Aang and not Sokka. But then I realized and thanks to debates on AvatarSpirit and Distant Horizon. That she is the only spirit that could help with the waves. There was a full moon out that night too. (I bet Hakoda was glad Katara didn't know bloodbending yet.) I was okay with Avatar Roku's appearance, although I knew he was the one that called upon Yue.
The ending of the episode was really cool as well. Some people say it is impossible for them to find Aang the next day. It really isn't, I pinpointed their locations. They stopped at the port where they ran into the pirates right? That is somewhere near the very edge of the Earth Kingdom. The Crescent Island isn't that far from the port. I have a feeling Hei Bei's village is near that area as well. That means by air, there really isn't that far to travel. Of course they had to get past the blockade but that is another story.

Avatar Roku was there because he was guiding Aang and now I realize Yue was there to assist him. But it is kind of weird how they just found him on that island, then again they've been there before so it would be one of the first places I would think to look in the Fire Nation.

I like said before, it's all in locations. The port was pretty much on the tip of the Earth Kingdom, nearly a straight shot to the island. The first time they went there was during the Winter Solstice. Meaning Hei Bei's villages is probably near as well. Air travel was always the quickest way to get somewhere. Aang didn't need to fly that far to get there. The blockade was still there and something tells me when he saw the blockade, he knew where to go.
The gaang had Appa, meaning they would have just retraced their steps from the first trip. They still needed to get past the blockade, but that was probably the only challenged they faced. Even if they were already tracking him by night. It would still be a little hard to see a big flying bison, even though he is white. I might try to get a map post here so I could show you were I think everything is.
Although I do agree with you on the whole Maiko thing. I did felt like I missed something. Luckily for me, I have the two Avatar magazines. But there still should have been some build up. I think th episode could have easily went one hours to include all of the comic stripes included in the magazine. All of them could have easily fit if the episode was an hour. Like the Earth King training his bear, Zuko's story in Ba Sing Se (which has Maiko in it), and what the invasion force did before Aang woke up. These things could have been added to the episode.
