I've heard about this (not specifically) before. I know this is fictional, but there was something like this in the early episodes of Nip/Tuck where the mother did not believe in surgery and would only pray for her; they ended up taking her into some kind of medical custody to preform the operation without the mother's consent.
This really sucks though; seems like another way people abuse religion. I find it really odd that the family doesn't even attend church...it sounds like some kind of cult, imo. I can't believe the other kids have not been taken out of the family. That really, really sucks.
