Now this is something I have been thinking about as of late. I am beginning to think that when Katara came to the Northern Water Tribe she may have been a curse then a gift. Remember she fought a master for the right to learn how to fight. Seeing how the NWT is basically a sexist nation. But remember there were children there who may have been inspired to do what Katara was doing.
Now you may think this is a blessing, but when you think about it. Society is probably going to change to allow girls the opportunity to fight. What is wrong with this you may ask? Nothing, but when you have elders and parents used to the old customs. They may find it hard to deal with letting woman and even daughters fighting or doing other male dominated stuff. Then when they do adjust to this new way of life. There is bound to be more males thinking they are better then females because they are nothing more then a girl.
Which made me wonder if Katara bought the curse of sexism to the tribe, then getting rid of it. What do you think?

Well, there's the thing: she only got trained by Pakku by being his girlfriend's granddaughter instead of proving her worth with her skills. If a new reign of feminists WERE to come about in the Northern Watertribe, they might consider Katara a hypocrite.

This doesn't really make sense. If she hadn't come, the Fire Nation might have been successful in their raid.

Well I honestly do not believe things is going to change much in the tribe, however Water is the element of change and it is possibly their culture adapted. But yeah, the only reason Katara was trained was because she was Pakku's (could have been) granddaughter. But that kind makes Pakku a hypocrite as well though.

This doesn't really make sense. If she hadn't come, the Fire Nation might have been successful in their raid. You mean if AANG hadn't come, don't you mean? If Katara hadn't come, why would Aang have gone? And if she hadn't gone, she wouldn't have gotten the Spirit Oasis water and Aang would have died. Plus, she protected Aang for a while when he was in the Spirit World, so without her, there's no telling if he would have been able to defeat the Fire Nation.

Well remember if it wasn't for Katara's lack of waterbending skills back at the Southern Tribe, none of this would have never happened.

I get the feeling this site is overrun with Katara haters. So heres the thing. Of course it was a blessing. I agree with BB. If she hadn't gone, she never would have mastered her bending, and there would have been many lost battles in season two and three. Not to mention Aang would have died. End of story. And also, I think Katara was allowed to train with Pakku both because of her amazing talent and because of her relation to Kanna. But either way it doesn't matter, they are at a time of war where Katara NEEDED to have her bending down. Like I said before, they couldn't have made it without her skills.(The same goes for everyone in the gang) It would have been outragious had she pouted and said "NO! I'm not going to learn untill you agree to do it soley based off my skill." First, you would have found some flaw in that, because she's Katara and you hate her. Second, They needed her to learn. She didn't have TIME to be uber feminist. And uber feminists are obnoxious anyways. Third, sometimes things don't always go perfectly the way you want them, guess what? YOU HAVE TO GO WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT. If the only way for her to become a student of Pakku and become a master was because her grandmother was Kanna, then thank god her grandma was Kanna. Heck, if anyone believes in fate or destiny.. theres some right there for you.

It would've been great if ONE girl watching from the crowd WAS an uber feminist and says, "Wait a minuite, what about us? Are you gonna train us too or are you just playing favorites?"

The only other time I see the Northern Water Tribe making an exception for a girl is if the next Avatar is born into their tribe as a girl. The Avatar is going to have to learn waterbending in all sources, however she will probably learn the female technicals first and then move on to the male ones. Either way, I am hoping that if they do make a new series about the next Avatar. It will be a she and she will be born into the Northern Water Tribe. It will be interesting to see.

When you think about it, if Katara never got Aang out of the Iceberg than the fire nation raid would have succeeded and the moon and ocean spirit would be dead. I'm pretty sure she saved them all.

As much as she annoys me, without Katara, there'd be no Avatar. She's the little match that ignited the spark.
I doubt she cursed the tribe and brought about its sexism; it was always, invisibly present. She just provoked it and made it far more obvious. She became a role model for the women of the Northern Tribe.

Katara differently hasn't been a role model for a good majority of Zutarians sadly. I have encountered a few Zutarians (girls, obviously) that say Katara was rude.

Of course; a majority of the series had Zuko portrayed as the villain, and naturally, being enemies, Katara's obvious reaction was that of maliciousness. But, I won't deny it, I never really saw her as this motherly image some conceive her to have either. I solely found her as a compassionate friend, especially to Aang.
